Google update saves your Bacn(but what is Bacn)

I’ve been talking with friends lately about the unprecedented amount of email that had lands in my inbox lately and I’m not alone. To most people this overwhelming wave of email is referred by them as spam, but this is not strictly the case. It’s actually not spam, its bacn there is a difference. Let me explain…

Spam can be classified as unsolicited mail, sent by people who have harvested or bought your email address and whom you have no connection with. Spam is illegally sent email and often (hopefully) ends up being filtered by your junk mail filter.

Bacn is legitimate mail sent by companies or individuals with whom you have had some contact and therefor given consent to sending mail. It is compliant with the local Spam on electronic communications laws. Some examples of Bacn might be systems generated mail, notifications, newsletters, invoices and so on. Bacn is often important mail but not the highest priority.

This difference in classifications is important because it helps us to prioritise our inbox. Of course most of us will have a series of rules set up to filter out some of these messages, but even this can be difficult to administer for some of us.

Google have attempted to remedy this with a new release this morning call “Priority inbox”

We expect Google will consider not only the content of the email (as it currently does to serve ads) but also the size of the distribution list to determine whether the email is Priority mail or just Bacn.

It seems to work so far but time will tell and it very early days.
